Tasmania East Coast

A 20 day, 820 km, cycle tour with tents down the east coast of Tasmania from Launceston to Hobart.

From Launceston we head north to Low Head then across to St Helens on the East Coast.

From St Helens we travel down the East Coast as Far as historic Port Arthur.

Finally we head North West to Hobart.

15 minutes before the maxi taxi was due we rang to ensure it was on its way for a 12noon pick up. Chewy was on his way. 12:06 we received a text that Prashant was on his way. No indication as to how close he was. Given that the taxi didn't arrive for our Korean trip, I was nervous. .....

Georgia had been watching women's bike racing and noted that their hair was either short or plaited. Georgia opted for plaited so as to be ready for a full days riding. Her first attempt was too high, so some adjustments were required before we were ready to depart. .....

It rained in the early morning and we awoke to grey skies. We had planned to camp in Bridport, but the threat of another day of rain had meant that we had booked a mixed dorm in the Bridport Youth Hostel.....

We awoke to a glorious day. The bunk beds were surprisingly comfortable, and the room surprisingly quiet except for a group of drunken locals returning to the house next door around 3:30am....

January 14, 2018

There wasn't much wind when we set off around 9:30 via the petrol station to pump up our tyres for a day of dirt road riding. Rob was there ordering a second breakfast and we had a brief chat before heading off....

It was a leisurely start. One of the great things about cycling is that you actually need to eat a lot to have enough energy to cycle. As we had a well-earned rest day we cooked up a BIG BREAKFAST, consisting of bacon, eggs, mushrooms, spinach, baked beans and toast. It went down a treat....

January 16, 2018

We were up at 7am with plans to be on the road around 9am. With almost 80 kilometres to cover today, we wanted plenty of time to get to Bicheno....

January 17, 2018

Surprisingly, we all slept well. Despite a full campsite, it was reasonably quiet, perhaps due to the large number of cabins dotted around the site. We had set the alarm for 7am, to give us time to breakfast and shop....

January 18, 2018

Despite not being on the road today, we were up at 7am to get ready for a circuit walk of Wineglass Bay and the Hazards. We had cooked up the lamb yiros from the butchers the night before so lunch was quick to make....

We finished off last night with a few rounds of 500. Georgia and Simon partnered well together, one or the other having the Joker for most games. Jonno and I had to rely on skill to win any games, as the cards weren't in our favour....

January 20, 2018

The challenge today was to find as many ways as possible to celebrate Simon's birthday. We had started with a lovely dinner last night, but not sure that sleeping in a tent was particularly celebratory....

January 21, 2018

We enjoyed a leisurely start with pancakes for breakfast topped with the last of our butter and some apricot jam. We made ham and cheese wraps for lunch and chatted to one of the rangers, who had cycled south that morning and seen lots of wildlife....

January 22, 2018

It rained overnight so our tents were wet when we woke. We set some stuff out to dry whilst we had muesli and UHT milk for breakfast. I was surprised at how much less filling muesli is without yoghurt or maybe I was just really hungry.....

January 23, 2018

We enjoyed a leisurely start, and an enormous breakfast. The kids were delighted not to eat muesli, and also had toast and crumpets. Simon and I enjoyed the eggs from the chooks, and we also had bananas all round....

January 24, 2018

There was time for a big breakfast this morning, which for Jonno meant mountains of bacon on toast, plus three extra slices of toast. For the rest of us, bacon and eggs....

January 25, 2018

It was overcast as we left around 9:30, with our first big hill of the day just to get from the campsite to the main road. It was pleasant cycling in the relatively cool morning air, and for once the wind was behind us....

January 26, 2018

It was warm when we cycled out of Primrose Sands around 9:30. We retraced our route back to the junction, and went part way up the hill before turning left towards Dodges Ferry....

January 27, 2018

It was forecast to reach 36 degrees today, definitely too hot for riding. We had been kept awake till well after midnight by an obnoxious male in one of the cabins who seemed to think that the entire campsite would be interested in his conversation with his truckie mate on speaker at 12:30....

A relaxing day wandering around Hobart Docks area...
