We had arranged to meet for breakfast at 9:30 and arrived to meet Moritz’s wife, Katrin, who was returning from walking Tila. Eggert had expected the family back later in the day so it was a nice surprise to be able to meet her so soon. Her daughter, Milena, also joined us for breakfast and then her son Jascha appeared.
After some discussion, it was agreed that we would go to the stadium at Radolfzell to watch some of the round robin football tournament. Heinrich’s nephew, Moritz coaches the local under 13s team and they were playing a few games. Each game was 18 minutes and though they didn’t win the game we saw, it was nice being part of the local crowd.
We took a walk from the stadium through the Halbinsel Mettnau nature reserve. Heinrich and I climbed the Mettnau-Term observation platform with stunning views across the Untersee, whilst the others relaxed in the shade on their phones. We continued down to the lake at Mettnauspize and then returned through Mettnaupark.
It was after 2pm and definitely time for lunch. Like any good football competition, there was a BBQ and we ordered the currywurst sausages which came on a plate covered in sauce which we then stuffed into the bread roll.
On the way home, we detoured via Radolfzell to visit an atm and had a walk through the old town before stopping for icecreams. Katrin dropped us back at the hotel, for a late afternoon siesta before we met again for dinner at the hotel.
Junis, the eldest son, had worked at the restaurant during the day but was relieved of his duties as he joined us for dinner. The restaurant, Gasthaus Sternen, specialises in the use of seasonal and local produce and we met Peter, who runs the Gasthaus. The meal started with two amuse bouche, translated as ‘greetings from the kitchen’. The first was smoked salmon and the second a tasty Thai soup. I ordered fish from the Black Forest with white asparagus, peas and pearl barley, whilst Simon had lamb rump with ratatouille, baby corn and polenta and we all shared a bottle of local white wine. The food was delicious. I also tried some of Eggert’s cheese spaetzle, a local specialty.
Moritz and Jascha joined us as we were finishing our meal. Both Katrin and Moritz had spent time in Australia and now taught English so we were able to converse easily and the children spoke good English as well. We encouraged them all to visit Australia some time soon.
