The aim of our rest day was to take our time exploring Colmar so we wandered out mid morning to visit the tourist office and pick up a walking map. There was lots to look at, including shops decorated with roosters and watering cans. Particularly impressive was the House of Heads, decorated with over 100 masks, and the Pfister house, built in the 16th century for a Besancon hatter, painted with scenes from the old and new testaments.
The Collegiate Sainte Martin, erected on the ruins of two other churches, towered above the houses and we took a quick look inside.
A few more stops on the walking route and we decided it was time to try the Alsace special of Tarte Flambee – a dish with a dough base topped with a mixture of cream, soft white cheese, bacon chunks and onions. Baked in a baker’s oven it was traditionally made on the days when bread was baked on farms. I went for the local Munster cheese, whilst Si tried the goat’s cheese. Both were delicious.
We continued our tour and walked past the covered market and through the Tanner’s and Fishmonger’s districts, and back through the Parc du Champ-de-Mars with the intention of visiting the Bartholdi Museum, the birthplace of the man who designed the Statue of Liberty. Unfortunately it was closed on Mondays, so all we could see was the courtyard. Walk done, we made our way home for a restful afternoon.
