Hanging out with the locals

(5 KMs)

Saturday 2nd November

Denmark

It was so nice to be able to sleep in, with no rush to be anywhere, and plans just to cycle out to a winery or two via Harewood Forest.

Then Jonathan messaged offering access to a washing machine and the opportunity to drive out to some of the local beaches.  We accepted both and were soon in his car heading back out to Lights Beach.  With a little more time, we were able to enjoy some of the nearby walks and viewpoints and leant a little about life in Denmark and the changes that had occurred over the many years Jonathan had been living in the local area.

We shouted him a coffee at the horse float that doubled as a coffee van and enjoyed the westerly views and the gusting wind.  On the way back he detoured to show us the route we would be taking tomorrow.  It was a very pleasant couple of hours.

We decided to head to Rockcliffe Winery for some wine tasting and pizza for lunch.  The sun was starting to break through and the day was warming up.  It was an easy 2.5km ride down, though we noted it would be a steep climb back.  We were the only people at the Winery and Steve, the owner, gave us a  five page wine list and asked what we wanted to try.  A few more people came in, and before long the place was very busy, Steve was entertaining company as he responded to requests to try different wines.  We ended up chatting to Geoff and Julie who were travelling from Bunbury in their caravan.  The wine servings were very generous and we worked our way through quite a few samples before deciding on two bottles to take home.

We invited Geoff and Julie to join us for pizza and spent a pleasant afternoon chatting to them and enjoying the excellent pizza cooked by the young French lad, introduced as the Catering Manager.

The climb back was as steep as anticipated but fortunately short and we arrived at Jonathan’s studio just before it was due to close.  I wanted to buy an anniversary present/souvenir, and settled on a lovely ceramic piece stamped with a fish pattern.
