We had a leisurely coffee and chat with Cath and Finn, and a quick call to Jane to catch up on her news, before bidding them farewell and making the short drive to Sturminster Newton.
After a quick catch up with Bryony and Ron over a cup of tea, we drove with Bryony to the base of Hambledon Hill, one of the best preserved Iron Age hill forts in Britain. Located in the Blackmore Vale, the chalk grassland site was one of a chain of prehistoric hill forts. After climbing to its summit, we could see across three counties, Dorset, Somerset and Wiltshire
We then made our way down to the village of Shroton, passing Ron’s favourite cricket pitch before settling in for lunch at the Cricketers.
After walking over the hill to Shillingstone, we followed some of the North Dorset trailway, part of Bryony’s cycle route to work. We surveyed the terrain and its suitability for summer commuting on her new bike.p
Ron cooked a delicious fish and lentil dish for dinner which we enjoyed with a couple of bottles of wine. Due to the self-confessed poor performance of our hostess we had apples for pudding.
