Beer to Branscombe

A somewhat cloudy morning as we headed to Budleigh Salterton to explore the newly reclaimed wetlands. Debbie had posted on Facebook that this was one of her favourite places, which seemed as good a reason as any to revisit it.
The beach was a typical English pebbly beach lined with beach huts and bookended by a dramatic cliff. The River Otter Estuary was a salt marsh habitat and over 120 species of birds have been recorded on the site. Due to frequent flooding, significant work has been undertaken to reconnect the River Otter to its floodplain creating a wonderful environment for birds and walkers, many of whom wielded binoculars and large cameras, as well as the occasional dog.
Next stop was Beer with its cliff top view of the pebbly beach with its boats, walking mats and cafes. We took the road out of town and were soon crossing the fields with views down the coast – a little hazy but still visible. We were quite warm by the time we descended into Branscombe and followed the road to the Masons Arms for lunch.
We enjoyed a lovely lunch in the sun with the dogs enjoying a few surreptitious French fries from Georgie’s enormous serve of moules mariniere.
It was a steep climb out of town but a quicker walk back to Beer where we wandered through the town and back to the cliff line to see if the visibility had improved.
We detoured home via Honiton where we met my ex-boyfriend, John, for a drink at the Star. It was lovely to catch up and share news of our lives and those of former friends.
