Cycling the edge of Dartmoor

Tuesday 18th March

Okehampton

Another sunny day, but cold and windy.  We drove in two cars to Okehampton, with our bikes in the boot.  Graham and Georgie hired e-bikes, but they took a while to sort out a bike which was the right size for Georgie.  Fortunately, there was an adjacent café so we could stay warm with a coffee whilst we waited. Just after 11am, an hour later than planned, we cycled off on the Granite Way.  It was a sealed surface and easy riding, though the wind was gusty at times.  We passed Souton Church and the route took us past wonderful views of the edge of Dartmoor.

We reached Lyndon and stopped into to book a table at the Castle Inn.  Unfortunately, Lyndon Gorge was closed at the first car park and we continued a mile down the road to the Waterfall entrance.  We checked the time, and decided we could walk quickly  down to view the waterfall and still have enough time for lunch.

It was a lovely rustic pub and our Venison pie was delicious.  Given that the e-bikes needed to be back by 3pm, Georgie and Graham set off at speed whilst Simon and I followed on more slowly.  The wind was extremely gusty at times particularly as we crossed the viaduct.

Back at the car park, we chatted a while with the owner of the hire bike shop then loaded the bikes in the car and returned home via Tescos.
