Into the fog

Tuesday 25th March

Wales Pen y Fan

When we were first planning to visit, Kathy had sent a link to Pen y Fan which is the highest peak in South Wales and part of the Brecon Beacons National Park.  Justin had recommended a few routes that we could follow, but we settled for a more direct route to give us time to explore Brecon in the afternoon.

It was fine as we commenced the climb with views along the gully.  However, as we progressed we could see the fog rolling in and before long we were immersed in it, with descending walkers appearing through the mist.

Disappointingly there were no views from the top and we were some way down the steep descent before the skies cleared and we could see the reservoir in the distance. We ate lunch with the Welsh ponies by the Little Taff River.

We arranged to meet Kathy in Brecon and had a quick look around town before meeting in Morrisons.  Kathy gave us a guided tour of Brecon which provided interesting insights into life in regional Wales and the history of the town.

Brecon is a market town on the confluence of the River Usk and Afon Honddu. It was first built as a Roman military base and long retained a garrison presence. There was an old Norman castle, but little appeared to remain. We visited the new library built around an old museum then headed up to the Catherdal in search of a café.

Unfortunately it was closed on a Tuesday so we drove to the Talybont general store for hot chocolates and a walk down the canal.  Kathy told us about the pair of ospreys that now reside in the area much to the delight of the locals who have set up a monitoring program.  We ran into a few friends of Kathy and chatted a while before returning to the car and back to the house for another delicious dinner.
