It was another wet morning as we departed, following winding paths through the countryside. We donned full wet weather gear just before a climb only to find the rain ease almost immediately so were sweating by the time we reached the top. From there it was a lovely descent through green fields to the town of Biberach.
Another beautiful town, we enjoyed our pastries with coffee at a bakery, and then walked our bikes through the main square and back streets. Soon after leaving town we passed a colourful sign post showing distances and directions to a variety of cities.
There was a market in full swing as we entered Laupheim with the Main Street lined with stalls mainly selling clothes, belts, and other household goods. Right at the end we spotted a fruit stall and bought some strawberries for lunch and blueberries for breakfast. We found a shaded park bench for a picnic and were pleased when the slight drizzle eased and the sun emerged.
We continued our gradual descent finally reaching the Danube River and made our way to Ulm with its towering Minster, a gothic-style Lutheran church featuring the world’s tallest steeple.
It was a short, very steep climb to our accommodation and we relaxed with a cup of tea before showering and heading back into town to a Vietnamese tapas restaurant that had been recommended by our Airbnb hosts. Clearly Ulm is a bike-friendly city, as demonstrated by the foot button designed to trigger the lights.
