Prior to departure we walked up to the town square to buy lunch provisions at the Saturday markets. Unfortunately, they were very small so it was fortunate that the boulangerie was open and we could buy bread and pastries, just picking up some fruit in the market. As Si took the bikes out of their storage space, he discovered that I had a puncture which further delayed our departure.
We took the road below the town and through the Thermal quarter down to the canal, stopping for morning tea at about 23kms. A little further on we reached Digoin, with its Le Pont de Canal Digoin allowing the Canal Laterale a la Loire to cross the Loire River.
Lunch was also on the canal at Paray Le Monial and a few kms later we turned away from the canal and climbed the hills past cattle farms. We passed the Chateau de Digoin with its expansive grounds. It was only a few more kms to our accommodation, a B&B in Palinges.
As there were no cooking facilities, we had ordered dinner which arrived in a basket and consisted of a salad, coq au vin and rice, a little cheese and a rich chocolate cake. Fortunately we had some wine with us so enjoyed a pleasant meal in our living area.
