The bread rolls that we had for lunch yesterday were so good, that we returned to the bakery for more on our way out of town. We followed route 5 and were soon cycling through farmland, past fields of baby watermelons with yellow flowers.
At our first rest break there was a most impressive sculpture of a castle, the ‘Tassilo Blittersdorff’ which was part of a program of culture art in public space.
It was lovely, undulating cycling and we found a beautiful spot for morning tea with expansive views across the valley with the town of Aspan and der Zara nestled below.
Our first attempt at picking cherries was disappointing, as most of the ripe cherries were out of reach. We ate the handfew we could pick and continued on through more farmland including fields of wheat. Soon after, we discovered a little hut, complete with fridge and cold drinks including beers, conveniently located near a cherry tree which G climbed, but the pickings were disappointing.
After cresting another hill, marked by a cross, we cycled through a wind farm, before coming across another avenue of cherry trees. This time we found a tree full of easily accessible ripe cherries and filled a plastic container. We then passed a couple using a step ladder, which was the ideal solution.
We were back in wine country and stopped for lunch at Oasis, a lovely park with a picturesque lake on the edge of Gaweinstal. We continued another 15kms, before detouring into Matzen to stock up on supplies at the supermarket.
It was only another few kilometres to our accommodation in Prottes and the hostess, Erna was there to meet us. She explained that the house had belonged to her grandparents and she was now letting it out as holiday accommodation. It was small but had everything we needed, including a nice garden. We appreciated the fresh fruit from her garden and purchased one of the local bottles of wine available in the fridge.
