As the bikes were already loaded onto the car, we made a quick getaway just after 7am and had minimal traffic to Blackheath where we stopped for coffee. Eugene headed straight to his preferred café, Altitude Delicatessen which had been his favourite stopping place when travelling over the mountains for school sport games.
Traffic was reasonable as we took the obligatory detour along the Darling Causeway, though increased through Lithgow as the highway closure funnelled all vehicles through the back streets of the town.
We had a very nice lunch at the Byng Street Local Store which had been a favourite venue during my work visits to Orange. It was only another hour or so to Parkes and our Airbnb was clean and functional. As it was located on the outskirts of town, we took the car to stock up on breakfast and lunch supplies before returning to the cool house for an afternoon siesta.
Marissa had booked Rice Thai Restaurant in the centre of town. The temperature had dropped and it was a pleasant 20-minute walk. We didn’t have time for a full circuit of the town but did spot the Elvis statue in Cooke Park. This was created by Terrance Plowright who also sculpted the Henry Parkes monument in the town square.
Jaffa the Astronaut stood 3 metres high and was designed to pay tribute to the diverse heroes and space travel, from astronauts to mathematicians. The striking picture of Priscilla included reflections of another Elvis art mural.
