Sunset on the Maroochy River

It rained during the night but the sky was blue as we set off to explore the local area.  Our plan was to follow the coastal route towards Moolooloba and out to the spit, stocking up with supplies on our way home.  

First stop was excellent coffee at the Booley café. We walked by a few empty cafes before spotting Booleys which was full of people.  Fortified, we continued along the coastal path, noting the signs for the Coast Trek though it was too early for any walkers to be approaching the end point regardless of whether they were walking the 10, 30 or 50kms route.  

We followed the path along the Mooloolah River to the end of the spit, then retraced our steps to the town centre, where we had seafood chowder and a salt and pepper squid Caesar salad for lunch – the latter being a popular local menu item. Over lunch we discovered that the local Australia Post shop wasn’t open on Saturdays which put a dampener on our plans to post our bike bags to the Brisbane GPO the following day.  

We decided to do our grocery shop, drop home for a cup of tea then walk to the Post Office at Cotton Tree. The sun was setting as we reached the Maroochy River and we detoured past the handful of stalls and food trucks that comprised the twilight markets.  The lady in the Post Office had only visited them once and suggested that the Sunday morning markets might be a better option.  

On our way back we stopped off at the Breeze of Italy wine bar for a leisurely drink and ended up chatting to the couple at the next table. They had done quite a few cycle tours so we swapped stories about our favourite routes.  We stopped for some very ordinary noodles at Sang’s restaurant on the way home, as it was now too late to cook dinner.
