Noting the absence of open cafes in the Tarra-Bulga National Park, we stopped for a coffee at One Shot Double Shot in Traralgon and bought some chicken rolls at the nearby bakery.
It was a pleasant drive to the National Park and we parked at the visitors centre which was the start of a collection of walks through temperate rainforest. We followed the Lyrebird Ridge track and, resisting the temptation to turn right onto the Forest Track, took the short Ash Track, which joined the pretty Fern Gully Nature Walk.
We crossed Corrigan’s suspension bridge and took the loop path to enjoy the cool walk along the creek before recrossing the bridge and taking the Scenic Track and then the Link Track back to the visitors centre.
It was still a little early for lunch so we drove onto the Tarra Valley picnic area, timing our arrival with the rain, so were pleased to be able to park next to a covered picnic shelter which was the perfect spot for lunch. Fortunately the shower passed quickly and we followed the Tarra Valley Rainforest walk through fern glades and past ancient Myrtle Beech trees towards Cyathea Falls. We opted for the west track to the falls which climbed up a gushing creek before reaching the scenic falls.
We had more rain on the drive towards the Mornington Peninsula but it didn’t last long. The sky had cleared by the time we reached Yuringa Boat Harbour where we enjoyed a cup of tea whilst watching the black swans on the water.
A final stop to pick up groceries for dinner and we were soon at McCrae where we had time to relax and catch up with Julie and Andrew before cooking dinner.
