The weather forecast was ominous, with 15-30mm of rain in Mulwala. According to the Bureau of Meteorology site, the rain was forecast to be heavier in the afternoon so we planned to leave early. I had contacted our Airbnb host requesting an early check in and were advised that we may be able to check in from 1pm.
It was wet when we woke, and according to the radar, the rain was going to ease around 8am. We were on the road soon after and retraced our route to Barooga under a light drizzle. This soon eased and the sky brightened. The wind picked up and we cycled into a consistent and tedious headwind that made for slower going.
About 10 kilometres from Mulwala the countryside became greener and we could see hills in the distance – a nice change from the flat plains.
The rain held off and we settled into the Mulwala bakery for a late-morning coffee thinking we would then head to the nearby Blacksmith pizzeria for an early lunch. Plans changed when I was notified that our accommodation was ready just after midday. We headed straight there just as it started to rain. We waited for the deluge to pass before walking down to the Lake Mulwala where we made friends with the one of the locals.
Blacksmiths was nearby and we enjoyed our pizzas under the cabana. We heard thunder as we left and it started to drizzle so we hurried to pick up some provisions for the supermarket, arriving back at our accommodation just in time. It rained on and off for the rest of the afternoon with some heavy showers in the early evening.
