We were keeping an eye out for the forecast rain, but it was still dry as we set off to the Stony Point ferry to Cowes. We were only a few hundred metres down the road when the drizzle started and was soon heavy enough for us to stop and don rain gear.
It was apparent that the rain had set in so we acknowledged we were in for a wet ride. We made quick time on the sealed roads before turning onto Foxeys Rd. We debated a while as to whether we were cycling through private property as we passed through a gate and continued along a dirt track. The track was wet and slippery and we made slow progress before the track turned into a road, which looked more promising – until we discovered that it was heavily corrugated and we slowed down even more. It was a relief to finally return to tarmac, and we picked up speed before spotting a sign to Bittern which promised coffee.
We were wet and cold, so the hot coffee was much appreciated, as were the accompanying sausage rolls and the meat pie that Andrew declared was particularly good.
It was a further 7 kilometres to Stony Point and we had allowed plenty of time so had time for to eat our sandwiches whilst we waited to board. The bikes were loaded onto the back of the boat and we made the most of the warm interior, enjoying a cup of tea.
Most of the passengers disembarked at French Island and it was another 20 minutes to Cowes. Fortunately it was an easy ride to the Airbnb and we turned on the heating straight away before carefully storing the bikes and enjoying hot showers.
Given the wet weather, Julie had changed our booking for to see the penguins to the following night, which turned out to be a wise decision. We walked into town for a lovely dinner at Anerie restaurant accompanied by a delicious PA PA pinot noir from the Gippsland (Maffra)-based Xavier Goodridge winery.
