It was foggy as we drove through the hills to the coast, with extremely poor visibility. We could only imagine the views we missed as we finally emerged into sunshine and views to the coast.
Our plan was to cycle the Bass Coast Rail Trail to Anderson and continue on to San Remo for lunch. We started with an excellent coffee at the South Drop Espresso in Wonthaggi before parking at near the visitors centre and picking up the trail passing the Poppet Head at Apex park. We cycled through open farmland and across old wooden bridges before reaching the Kilcunda surf beach.
The cycle path became steeper as it headed towards San Remo with one particularly steep ascent requiring us to walk our bikes. We were rewarded with views over the bay and towards Phillip Island.
At San Remo we stopped for fish and chips overlooking the bridge to Philip Island then returned the same way, meeting an echidna on the path.
It was such a beautiful afternoon that we decided to take the Bunerong Coastal drive from Cape Paterson to Inverloch. The road offered ocean glimpses and we stopped off at the vantage points which had stunning views and interesting names such as Twin Reefs and the Oaks. At Shack Bay, I took a slight detour off the track for an unobstructed view of the gorgeous coastline. Eagles Nest was a towering sandstone formation which you can walk to at low tide.
Our final destination was the Burra Brewing Co for a well earned beer on our way home.
