The Big Peanut

Our host had warned us about the annual South Burnett Express Rail Trail relay with the course covering 60km from Kingaroy to Wondai and return. Teams of 5 – 8 runners registered to complete the course, with some 150 participants anticipated.  We didn’t see many of them – though it looked like the local police may have entered a few teams.  

We had done our research to find the Hunter Gatherer Trader, one of the very few cafes open in Kingaroy. Not much happens in Kingaroy on a Sunday although at least the IGA was open so we could stock up on breakfast supplies. 

The Big Peanut was located on the outskirts of town, paying homage to the region’s peanut farming heritage. Directly opposite was the Peanut Van and I picked up some chilli and lime peanuts for afternoon tea. 

The link road to Nanango was clearly marked and took us through the Sir Joh Bjelke-Petersen airport.  A line of rusting machinery marked the location of the Kingaroy and District Vintage Machinery Club. The road became more undulating and we climbed the first of many hills.  

I had booked Whipbird café in Coolabunia for lunch.  This was located in an historical church set amongst eucalyptus trees.  Even with only four main dishes on the menu it was hard to choose, and we were both very happy with our meals of sweet potato gnocchi and chicken schnitzel. We couldn’t resist a slice of their famous cheesecake for dessert.  

We appreciated our good lunch as we climbed four more hills after lunch to reach our Airbnb near Nanango.
